Orphaned Baby Elephants

I am embarrassed and appalled that humans are still slaughtering elephants for their ivory tusks.  It is barbaric that any human would want to purchase an ivory trinket carved from the tusks of a slaughtered elephant.  The slaughter of elephants for their ivory is brutal and often their babies witness the slaughter.  It is these babies -- now orphaned -- that the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust tries to rescue and raise at the orphanage in Kenya.  Other babies are rescued after having fallen down a well, being washed away by a river or some other tragedy.  But it is the slaughter of grown elephants for their ivory tusks that breaks my heart.  We will never be considered civilized as a race while atrocities like this occur.   I have adopted 12 baby elephants.  PLEASE ADOPT one or more yourself if you are moved by this ongoing tragedy.   ~Amy

Baby Sasab is rescued after being washed away by a river

Baby Sasab was washed away from his mother by a
river in November at approximate age of 2 weeks old.
He is now safe at the Sanctuary.  This 13 minute
video of his rescue is better than anything on TV.
Please watch and adopt this precious baby if you can.

 A sad update:
After adopting & posting about baby Sasab, I received news
that she died.  She couldn't recover from the difficulty of
being washed away by the river.  She seemed to be doing
better but in the end could not survive.
God bless you little baby Sasab. 

A new baby

Milk delivery

Can you imagine how much milk is required to feed the babies?  I realize there are hundreds of worthy causes around the globe that ask for your donation, however, something brought you to this blog today.  If you are a Starbucks attendee, maybe you could give up your lattes for a month and save the money to help the babies?  I love Starbucks too, but the babies need milk....    xoxo Amy

Three babies leave a zoo for freedom in a sanctuary!

In a landmark decision, the Toronto City Council of Toronto, Canada, voted to send the three beautiful elephants living in severe and inhumane confinement at the Toronto Zoo to the PAWS Sanctuary in California. This vote is monumental because the Toronto City Council out voted the request by the Toronto Zoo and the AZA to simply relocate the elephants to another zoo within their system. These elephants finally get a chance at a real life. Animal advocates, animal lovers, elephant scientists, animal welfare organizations and popular names have been fighting for their release for several years now. Thanks to organizations such as the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and Dame Daphne Sheldrick, who threw their hearts and support behind these three magnificent elephants; Iringa, Toka and Thika have secured the right to live out their lives together in an accredited sanctuary with land to roam and people who will love and respect their unique needs and well being.

Desnaring

An interesting-yet-disturbing article from the Sheldrick Trust about the SNARES that are set up to trap animals for meat.  Thank Goodness for the teams that are out there removing the snares.   

 

Agony and Ivory

The upcoming August 2011 issue of Vanity Fair Magazine will shine light on the continued slaughter of the majestic African elephants for their ivory tusks which are now valued at $700 a pound in China.  You can get an advanced peek at the article here.  To me, this is a sign that humanity is getting worse, not better.  Our continued slaughter of these amazing creatures so we can own an ivory trinket is inexcusable.  Please adopt an orphaned baby elephant and help the cause.  It's only $50 a year.  ~Amy

The rescue of Baby Wasin

A new baby ~ only one month old ~ was rescued from a well.  The mother was no where to be seen and is suspected to be a victim of poaching (that means slaughtered for her ivory tusks.).  Look at the beautiful orphaned baby.  Thank goodness the local tribesmen were compassionate.  You can see photos of the rescue and read about it here.  Possibly you can spare $50 to adopt Baby Wasin for a year?  The baby needs milk and your $50 will certainly help.  Thank you ~ Amy
